Planning for the Future at Emory University
The 1998 Emory University Campus Plan established seven guiding principles that served to inform campus development for succeeding years. Six years and 55 major projects later the campus has been transformed into a beautiful walking environment and the sense of an Emory architectural identity has been restored. Coincidentally, Emory Healthcare continues to offer some of the best science and clinical care in the country; applications from prospective students continues to increase as a result- of our growing stature as a first rate academic and research institution; and, our community is increasingly centered on environmental sustainability.
Today, we have a new and energetic administration that has consulted with the community in creating a new vision for Emory which calls us to create a destination university focused on academics, research, quality of life, healthcare, ethics, and community service. The University, in looking to the future, has a three-part plan of action. The Campus Plan Update 2004 (CPU4), the Clifton Corridor sub area Transportation Study 2004 and the University Strategic Plan will together provide the framework for future achievements of excellence.
CPU4's target objectives include:
- Revisit and assess the remaining building sites from the 1998 plan and determine their viability and capacity for the future; study older campus facilities to determine their life expectancy and the potential opportunities for capital renewal or replacement.
- Through interviews and discussions with the campus community identify the areas of campus that are special and memorable, and those in need of improvement.
- Identify academic and research program growth and consolidation criteria that affect the utilization of space and facilities.
- Update the Planning Principals, Design Standards, and infrastructure documentation established in the 1998 Campus Plan.
- Through detailed precinct studies, look at opportunities for rational development of the campus fabric.
- Identify the commonalities and uniqueness that inspire a greater quality of life for the total Emory community.
A master plan steering committee will oversee the Campus Plan Update process. The 2004 steering committee will consist of:
